LUCKY JIM PRESS KIT
Hi, I’m Lucky Jim. I make and play music that kids and families love!
BIO
Hi, my name is Jim Sharrock (aka Lucky Jim). I’m a Canberra-based musician and teacher. I write and perform family music and I have a fun new album ready to release: ‘There’s something stinky in the fridge and other family favourites’. The album is available via Bandcamp, and you can also listen here.
WHAT I DO
I’ve been playing and teaching music for over 20 years. When I’m not touring, I’m teaching in primary schools here in Canberra or running music workshops for organisations such as Young Music Society or Musica Viva here. For the last two years I have been playing music for kids in schools around Australia in a show with the band Doctor Stovepipe. It’s a Musica Viva show that follows musical trails around the world, exploring how music changes as it travels through space and time.
I love playing music for kids. It’s fun and raucous and they're an honest and responsive audience. As a teacher and parent, I find that listening to and playing music has a range of educational, emotional and social benefits. It is an important part of cultural life and can bring people together through play, song and dance. This is why I create and produce music for people of all ages. This project has been a labour of love for me and I think it’s my best work.
‘THERE’S SOMETHING STINKY IN THE FRIDGE AND OTHER FAMILY FAVOURITES’
I have written, collected and recorded this album of songs for families and people between the ages of 0 -116 years*. Hopefully parents will be happy to listen to it over and over again. The songs aim to engage the imagination, with a wide variety of musical genres and sonic textures.
I think kids deserve the opportunity to hear a diverse range of styles and sounds, with offerings of calypso, country, old-timey, rockabilly, psychedelia and a few gentle acoustic numbers on the album. There’s also a smorgasbord of strange instruments and exotic playing styles for listening wonderment.
Although Lucky Jim is the name on the CD this project has been a team effort. My family have supported me with writing and editing songs, giving feedback on recording and mixes and with a lot of help writing this introduction. I have also had an amazing group of friends and musical colleagues contribute to the writing and recording of this album. A host of Canberra talent has gone into making this music and artwork, with a range of quirky and eclectic instruments to give an original sound.
Keep playing,
Lucky Jim
