01 Monkeys in a Zoo title

The idea for this song came from my little friend Josie. She told me that her favourite film was Frozen 2 (Sorry, I haven’t watched it) and that she would really like me to write a song celebrating that film. I asked if it would be better if I wrote a song about her parents. She thought about my suggestion for a second, looked at her parents who were standing nearby, and said that she loved her parents but would prefer it if I wrote a song about Frozen 2.

Sometimes, when I write songs, they are disobedient and don’t go in the direction I want them to go. Josie’s song about Frozen 2 would not behave and in the end I gave up trying to write about a movie I have never seen and wrote a song about homeschool and the strong bonds of love that are forged in times of hardship. Although, I did manage to get Frozen 2 into the chorus.

I was also thinking about my own parents while writing this song, Alan and Sandy, who were always teaching me important lessons while I was growing up: lessons on love, responsibility, hard-work, community, caring for animals, and looking after your family and friends.

MONKEYS IN A ZOO

I am going back to school

Back to school I go

Before I run off with my friends

There’s something you should know

CHORUS

Mum and Dad

I love you

Even though we’ve been locked up

Like monkeys in a zoo

Everybody got sent home

But not for a Holiday

After three days locked inside

I tried to run away

CHORUS

Mum and Dad

I love you

Even though we’ve been locked up

Like monkeys in a zoo

Like monkeys in a zoo

With my brother too

I love you more than my favourite film

More than Frozen 2

We had lots of things to do

You tried to make us work

We sat down and did our best

And then we went berserk

CHORUS

Mum and Dad

I love you

Even though we’ve been locked up

Like monkeys in a zoo

Like monkeys in a zoo

With my brother too

I love you more than words can say

You know I still love you

Mum and dad

I love you

Even though we’ve been locked up

Like monkeys in a zoo
